When you have a smaller dog that will be in the heat a little longer than you'd rather, but you don't have anywhere cooler to put him/her, you may want to consider alternative cooling options. Depending on the activity or what you're going to be doing outside, you may want to bring a small kiddie pool and definitely bring a pop-up tent (tailgating tent) so to provide shade.
Otherwise, you may also want to consider a cooling collar for your small dog. There are larger cooling harnesses for bigger dogs, but when it comes to a smaller dog, you want to do things on a smaller scale.
These bandanas are made of a non-toxic co-polymer. All you have to do is soak the collar in cool water, ring out the excess water, and put it around your dog's neck.
