Female Dog in Heat

If you ahve a female dog and she is unlatered, then be prepared for her heat cycle. If you haven't had the chance to meet it yet, you will. Personally, I find that it is much healthier for your dog to get spayed BEFORE her first heat. You will cut down risks of mammary cancer, leaving only a 0.5% possibility of your female dog getting mammary cancer.
You dog's heat cycle will last about 18 to 24 days, with a about 5 to 8 months in-between each heat cycle.
If you decide to let yoru dog go through a heat cycle, you'll want to consider dog diapers, and secured fences. It's actually recommended that you keep the dog in the house except for leash walks outside to potty.
There are a few medicines that you can give your dog in order to mask the smell, but you want to consult your vet before you attempt to self-medicate your dog.
Just remember that depending on your dog, her first heat cycle will be between the age of 6 to 24 months. Typically, smaller dogs come to heat before larger dogs will.
Also, remember that spaying your female dog will not make her a puppy for her entire lifetime. You will only reduce hormones, eliminate heat cycle, and reduce risks of mammary cancer.
