My Cat is Overweight

April 4th 2009 14:06

Cats can be notorious for becoming overweight, and that's not something that you want our cat to experience. Obesity can lead to other, more serious, health concerns, and it can shorten the overall lifespan of the cat.

You want your cat to be in tip- top shape, where he can run, jump and play, but with obesity, he'll just want to sit there.

There are various factors that can lead to feline obesity, such as age, gender, spayed/neutered, diet, etc, but like people, cats can be predisposed to being overweight. In any case, you want to get your cat on a diet so that you can prevent any weight- related health concerns as well as a shortened lifespan due to the extra weight.

If you think that your cat is overweight, you want to consult your veterinarian. He may have extra advice that will be beneficial for your particular cat, because no amount of research will help you with your cat's individual needs. You and your veterinarian know your cat, and together you can find the perfect diet for him.

Awww, great big bundle of fluffy love there! Is there a significant difference to dietary changes for a senior cat (i.e. over 7 years or so)? Ours is 11 now, but thankfully runs around and plays like a kitten... just thinking ahead!

Definitely. When it comes to older cats, diet should be watched carefully because they have less energy. Obesity is very common to senior cats.
