There's No Such Thing As a Teacup Yorkie
November 25th 2008 01:07
It's true.... There's just no such thing as teacup Yorkie, and I'm tired of hearing how you and everyone else think that you've purchased a teacup Yorkie. It's just a ridiculous thought. It really is...
Here's the break down. Yorkshire Terriers have an average weight of 2 to 10 pounds, which means that in order to have a true teacup Yorkie, the dog at full growth would have to weigh less than 2 pounds. Most "teacup Yorkies" average at 2 to 3 pounds, which in turn qualifies the dog as a regular ole Yorkie.
The term "teacup Yorkie" is just a means for people to sell regular Yorkies at higher prices becuase they just-so-happened to have breed to smaller Yorkies to get small puppies, this does not mean that they are teacup.
Within the Yorkshire Terrier breed, there is not a teacup nor a standard size.
So, your two pound Yorkie is just a Yorkie- nothing less and nothing more...

I haven't heard that description, but I have heard and seen 'Toy Yorkies'. I love Yorkies but they are best at the usual size. That's not to say that I would discriminate against a small Yorkie, rather it's easier to not step on an average-sized one.

I know a number of people who have sought out teacup Yorkies and paid hundreds more than they should have because they thought they were getting something better.
The smaller the Yorkie, the more health concerns they typically have.
Please do not refer to all Yorkie lovers as the same, as I myself have one and I'm not ignorant as most when it comes to the breed and teacups. We and they do not encompass everyone. I know more people who have Yorkies that believe a teacup is a special offset of the "standard" Yorkie than who just refer to it as a small Yorkie. A Yorkie is a Yorkie, meaning the smaller ones shouldn't be called anything other than Yorkie.
