Tortoises make interesting pets if and only if you know what you're getting into because these guyes aren't like the 2 year hamster you had as a kid. Tortoises and turtles have arather long lifespan, and if you're in for a trip, then by all means do your research and get started.
Personally, I've heard different things about different tortoises to have as pets, but the one I've heard most about is the Russian Tortoise, which is a fairly simple tortoise to take care of.
You'll just want to make sure that you have the lighting, heat, and diet, on spot. It is very important that you have the right diet and heating becuase without it your tortoise will not be of the best of health, obviously.
But, anyway, when picking a pet tortoise, you want to make sure that you at least look into a few different species, so that you can make sure that you're ready for hte size, diet, and overall husbandry requirements that will be associated.
You'll also want to pay attention to any animal laws in your area, as some states have laws against certain species of tortoises being kept as pets. You'll just want to make sure that you are being legal about the whole thing.
