Letting Pets Sleep in the Bed

August 2nd 2010 20:59

With those pet parents who have their pets in the house, there are two different types of people. 1) Those who let their pets sleep in the bed, and 2) those who do not share the bed with their pets.

Personally, I'm a big fan of letting my dogs sleep with me in the bed, but of course that called for me having to get a larger pillow, as my APBT liked to share the pillow with me. What I didn't realize is that it's not just sleeping in the bed, sharing the bed with your pet can cause a few issues.

So, whether you're for letting your pet in the bed or against it, it's a good idea to be aware of what problems could be caused by doing it.

1. Asthma
2. Bugs and dirt
3. Insomnia or general problems sleeping
4. Other related respiratory problems

Plus, when you share the bed with your pet, you're telling him/her that he's up there on your level in regards to leadership and abilities, which can cause even more problems to include the following.

1. Separation anxiety when you leave.
2. Behavioral problems, to include chewing, marking, and barking.
3. Aggression and dominance concerns, if the dog really begins to think that he's on your level.

There really isn't a right or wrong answer to whether or not you should let your pet sleep in the bed with you. Just keep in mind that once they get used to it, sharing the bed can be a hard habit to break, for both you and your pet.

I have a small dog that I do not allow to sleep in or on my bed. The main reason is that he is constantly moving around while I am trying to sleep. Nap time on the couch is one thing but trying to sleep all night with my dog.....no way.

My previous dog (part shepherd and staffy-staffy sized), used to nearly take up the entire bed(which was amazing for such a small dog)! My current dog will stay on the bed for a bit then decides to sleep on/under the bed for the rest of the time.
Well, i didn't have too many major problems with behaviour etc; (only the usual when they were young# now that my current dog is older & when my other dog #before she passed), was older too she only had the normal staffy/shepherd attitude/adhd problems. I think it depends on how you raise them, and if you are consistent in training etc; I don't see it is a problem.
