Puppies Aren't For Everyone

September 29th 2009 18:51
Everyone wants a puppy, but what everyone doesn't realize is that puppies are more work than they think, and puppies just aren't the best option for everyone. People with busy schedules, and families with young children, really don't need a puppy.

If you think that adult dogs can't learn, you're wrong. If you think that adult dogs can't fully join your family, you're wrong. If you think that adult dogs can't grow up with your child, you're wrong. If you think that adult dogs can't adapt to your lifestyle, you're wrong.

Adult dogs are generally much better options for most people. Generally, they're already house trained, or at least crate trained. Most of the time, older puppies (9 months and older) are already showing their full personality, so you can guarantee that the pup/dog is going to fit into your family's personality.

For more information and more tips on trying to figure out if a young puppy is best suited for your family, and if you and your family is best suited for a puppy, then check out: Everyone Wants a Puppy But Is a Puppy Right for You?

To be honest, Whitney. I hated those people who buying puppies as present/gift during birthday or Christmas season. According to the previous statistics, more than 60 percent of the puppies turn into stray dogs, after they being abandoned by the irresponsibility owners!

I agree. I believe I wrote something somewhere, as to why pets should not be gifts unless the person you're giving the pet to goes with you to pick out the pet, as you never know exactly what the person wants. Better options are to give the person supplies or something and let the person get the pet when they want to, or to give them a homemade gift certificate for a pet when they are ready to go pick one out and the gift-giver just pay for the pet..

I believe my cousin is getting a dog for her 21st bday (not like she doesn't already have 3 dogs in her house), but her boyfriend is letting her pick out the puppy and he's just buying it.

i think its unfortunate that there are still so many people who abandon adult dogs, they buy them as puppies and dump them when theyre not "cute" anymore

Morgan, I agree. One time when I was volunteering, someone dropped off their older dog and the excuse was it didn't get along with the new puppy. I found that utterly ridiculous. They could have worked through it or something. They didn't care to try, and probably just needed an excuse to get rid of the older dog.

some people just shouldnt be allowed pets at all

i couldnt imagine ever taking my adult cat in and trading her for a newer model, shes got her own special personality and shes like a friend or a member of the family
