Prevent Getting Salmonella from Pet Reptiles

Salmonella is a big concern when a child comes to mom and asks for a pet gecko, snake, or lizard. Mom's first thing is, "you'll get salmonella. reptiles are gross and dirty." My mom did it, except she waited until they bought the small turtle while in Florida, talked to my aunt, who then convinced her I would get salmonella. Needless to say, the turtle didn't get to come home at that point.
I fought her from that day forth about salmonella and reptiles. At 16, they finally got my a leopard gecko, and I've been even more hooked on reptiles since.
And, guess what.... I've never gotten Salmonellosis, and neither has anyone in the house or anyone who has come into contact with my reptiles, to include my handicapped younger brother.
No, my geckos, lizards, and snakes, aren't a special mutation of reptiles who don't have the salmonella bacteria. They are normal reptiles.
The reality is, it's much harder than most people think to get salmonellosis from a pet reptile than it is from undercooked meat. To prevent contracting the salmonella bacteria, you want to make sure to wash your hands before and after you handle a reptile. Use soap and water or a hand sanitizer to kill any germs on your hands, arms, legs, where ever the reptile touched.
