Simple Basic Obedience and Dog Tricks

June 27th 2008 15:04
Whether you're getting a new puppy or dog, or you already have one and you need a little training advice, you definitely want to consider some of these tips.

Basic obedience training is one of the most critical training that your dog needs and deserves. As a pet, and family member in some cases, you want to protect your dog at all costs. Not only protect your dog, but you want to make sure that your dog is well-behaved so that you don't have to yell at him all the time.

A well-trained and socialized dog will make for a happy home. You will be willing to give your dog more privileges, which will make you feel better and it will make your dog happier.

Basic obedience commands that you should really train your dog include:
His name (Obviously)
Walking on a leash
Settle
Leave it
Give
Sit
Down
Stay
Wait
Come

With basic obedience training, you want to make sure that the training sessions are short. You don't want to overwhelm your dog and have long-drawn out sessions, as this will bore him and make him unresponsive to the commands. You want to have short, 10-15 minute sessions a few times a day. And, you always want to quit before you dog gets tired, so if this means to cut your 10 minute session to 7 minutes, then that's what you have to do.

When training your dog, you don't want to sound like this, "Sit, sit, sit, Sit, SIt, SIT!, good boy." 1) Your dog will learn to sit whenever he pleases versus on the first "sit; if you're reinforcing an old command during your session and your dog doesn't sit, then you want to break the, "sit, sit, sit" with a break word, such as wrong ("sit, wrong, sit"). 2) You never want to sound irritated or frustrated with your dog, as this will only impede sucessful training.

You want to do want to repeat commands in terms of "sit. good boy," "sit, good rocky," "sit, good." This will ensure that your dog understands the command fully. You also want to reinforce older commands in all of your sessions just to keep them fresh in your dog's mind.

When you think you've got basic obedience training down, you always want to reinforce the training with more training sessions, but you can always break up new training sessions by training fun tricks.

Simple dog tricks include:
Wave
Spin
Get Your Leash
Put Away Your Toys
Sit Pretty
Say You're Sorry

Hi Whitney

This is great advice, I taught my little cherub all the main things when he was a pup, but it was good to be reminded.

Fergal doesn't get his lead, probably because he can't reach the hook, but when it's on him, he carries it to the front door...so adorable!

Great post

Yea, you really should start training the day you bring the dog home, no matter what age. Although, as puppies are sponges, training at that stage tends to be a little easier, but that doesn't mean that it's not impossible to train an older puppy, young dog, or older dog.

You dog sounds cute. What kind of dog is he?

Hi Whitney

That's true, we started training as soon as possible and he really responded well. He's a good little chappie, he's half Maltese/Shih Tzu.

Here's a pic (I can never resist):

He's so cute. How much does he weigh? He looks a lot larger than both Maltese and Shih Tzu.I see the Shih Tzu coloring in his face, but I don't really see the Maltese. ?

Thanks, Whitney, he is a cutie.

He weighs 6.5 kilos. Yes, he is bigger than most of the other cross Shih Tzu/Maltesers that I've seen. He has the same colouring, but definitely bigger.

A lot of people ask if he has poodle in him as he has curly hair. INteresting that you don't see Maltese in him, what do you think he could be? I love hearing what people think
